day of getting tattooed
Eat well.
Bring a drink (something hydrating).
No weight training or extreme-sports (due to swelling).
We may not be able to accommodate your friends/family/significant other, we are a busy studio and it can get awfully crowded, so we ask that if you do bring moral support, that you keep it to 1 person - as we can always accomodate a friend.
Aftercare
Remove bandage in 3 hours.
Using your hands, wash the area with a fragrance-free soap and very warm water. Rinse well to remove all soap. You may blot dry with soft paper towel, but DO NOT RUB. Please avoid blotting with your towel as your used towel (and clean towels for that matter) can hold bacteria and transfer to your open wound.
DO NOT re-bandage unless specifically instructed to on the day of your tattoo.
Apply a VERY thin layer of Savlon or Bepanthen ointment the morning AFTER you've been tattooed, after you've showered. Apply 3 times daily, and only ever AFTER washing the area. It is very important that your tattoo does NOT appear wet and gooey from the ointment. If your tattoo looks too west or "gooey" this can form hard scabs in large sections, wash your tattoo and let it dry completely and reapply with LESS cream. Less is always more!
After 3 days, continue the washing process but replace the Savlon or Bepanthen with a fragrance-free lotion. Vitamin E creams such as cetaphil or Aveeno moisturisers are the cheapest and readily available as well as the most PH neutral for your skin. At this point in time, your tattoo may begin to peel or flake. You might be a little scabby or just barely flaky, everyone is different. Keep washing the tattoo three times daily for up to two weeks or whenever it begins to peel/flake, whichever comes first. When the peeling/flaking begins one wash daily of the area is fine.
We recommended using Savlon or Bepanthen for 3 days as it has antibacterial properties and can help speed up your healing process by protecting the area - and then switching to a fragrance-free moisturiser for the next 2 weeks or until the new tattoo loses its shine (can look silvery or "milky" in appearance) and your skin appears to be close to in its original state.
